How to play

  • Tap the pitch (or press Space) to bring the bowler in.
  • Tap again as the ball reaches the yellow circle at your crease. Perfect timing is a six, good timing a four.
  • Too early or too late gives fewer runs, an edge that can be caught, or a miss that may hit the stumps.
  • Watch the delivery name: slower balls and spinners arrive later, yorkers and fast balls arrive quickly.

How a real super over works

A super over settles a tied limited-overs match. Each team faces one over of six legal balls and its innings ends early if it loses two wickets. The team that batted second in the match bats first in the super over, and the team that scores more runs wins.

Since October 2019, if the super over is also tied, the ICC playing conditions call for another super over, repeated until there is a winner. The change came after the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s, where England beat New Zealand on the old rule: the side with more boundaries in the match won when the super over was tied.

  • Wides and no-balls count as extras and must be bowled again, just as in the main match
  • A bowler who bowls the first super over cannot bowl the next one if it is tied again
  • A batter dismissed in one super over cannot bat in the next one

Tips to win the chase

Read the delivery name before you tap. Fast balls and yorkers reach the crease quickly, so tap a little earlier. Slower balls and spin arrive later, so wait. A perfectly timed shot goes for six, but a wild swing at a yorker often hits the stumps.

With two wickets you can afford one risk, not two. If you need fewer than eight runs, take the sure fours and singles. If you need 15 or more, you will have to go for at least two sixes.

Super Over: questions

Tap the pitch (or press the space bar) to call the bowler in. Watch the ball and tap again just as it reaches the yellow circle at the batter’s crease. Perfect timing hits a six, good timing a four, and early or late timing gets fewer runs or an edge.
