Advantage
A discretionary ruling where the referee allows play to continue despite an infraction if stopping play would penalize the team that suffered the foul (Law 5).
Assistant Referee
One of two officials stationed along touchlines responsible for offside calls, out-of-bounds indications, and foul assistance.
Appealing
The act of players verbally or physically requesting an officiating decision; unsporting dissent is cautionable under Law 12.
Back-Pass Rule
Prohibits a goalkeeper from handling the ball with their hands if intentionally kicked to them by a teammate from their feet or directly from a throw-in (Law 12.2).
Ball in and out of Play
The ball is out of play only when it has wholly crossed the goal line or touchline, on the ground or in the air, or play has been stopped by the referee (Law 9).
Booking
The formal registration of a player's yellow or red card disciplinary sanction in the referee's official match record notebook.
Cap
An official ceremonial and statistical appearance credit awarded to a footballer representing their senior national team in an international fixture.
Caution
A formal disciplinary reprimand indicated by the display of a yellow card under Law 12.3.
Corner Kick
A restart awarded when the whole ball passes over the defending team's goal line after last touching a defending player (Law 17).
DOGSO
Acronym for Denial of an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity, an infraction penalizable by a direct red card or yellow card in the penalty box (Law 12).
Direct Free Kick
A set-piece restart from which a goal may be scored directly against the offending team without touching another player.
Dropped Ball
The neutral restart used by referees when play is stopped for reasons not specified in the standard laws (e.g., official interference, severe injury).
Goal-Line Technology (GLT)
An electronic sensor and high-speed camera tracking system that immediately notifies the referee's watch within 1 second if the whole ball has crossed the line.
Goal Kick
A restart awarded to the defending team when the whole ball crosses their goal line after last touching an attacking player (Law 16).
Handball
An offense under Law 12 involving a player touching the ball deliberately with their hand/arm or making their body practice unnaturally bigger.
Hat-Trick
The feat of an individual player scoring three goals in a single regulation fixture.
Offside Trap
A coordinated defensive tactic where defenders step forward in unison immediately before an opponent's pass to place attackers in an offside position.
Own Goal
A goal credited against a player who accidentally directs the ball into their own team's net.
VAR (Video Assistant Referee)
A qualified match official who reviews television footage in real time to assist the on-field referee with clear and obvious errors in four match-changing categories: goals, penalties, direct red cards, and mistaken identity.
