Rohit Sharma: the first to 650

Rohit Sharma passed Chris Gayle’s long-standing record in 2023 and became the first batter to hit 650 international sixes during the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on 11 January 2026. He also holds the record for the most sixes in ODIs and, in the same series, passed Gayle for the most ODI sixes by an opening batter.

Chris Gayle: the Universe Boss

Gayle was the face of power-hitting for two decades. He hit the first century in a men’s T20 International in 2007 and was the first to reach 500 international sixes. His total of 553 stood as the record until Rohit passed it.

Shahid Afridi: Boom Boom

Afridi announced himself in 1996 with a 37-ball ODI hundred in only his second match, the fastest ODI century at the time. He went on to hit 476 international sixes, the most by a Pakistan player.

How is a six scored?

Under Law 19 of the Laws of Cricket, six runs are scored when the ball is hit over the boundary without touching the ground inside it. A ball that bounces first and then crosses the boundary is a four. If a fielder catches the ball while touching or beyond the boundary, it is six runs, not a catch.
